Beating on a School Bus

The Belleville Police Department in Illinois released this video today. You can hear the school bus driver repeatedly telling students to sit down as the student is beaten.

News reports say two students might be expelled and three others may be suspended by the district.

  1. Of course, the students' behavior is deplorable. Let's examine the driver's conduct. A driver must take reasonable action designed to contribute to a safe ride for students. First, this appeared to be a bus out of control from the beginning - with students standing in the aisles. This driver's actions (in yelling "sit down") were ineffective, and yet there was no indication that he made any change in those actions. No pulling over, no call dispatch, etc. A tragic situation. . .and an effective teaching tool - for what not to do. Peggy Burns

  2. Exactly, the bus was out of control and should not have started for it's destination. I have been driving a school bus for 28 years, my bus does not roll until everyone is seated and the noise level is reasonable. A seating chart may also have helped the situation. Breaking up the kliks equals better behavior.

  3. I hate that happen. I wonder was that his regular route? The way they ingored him, seen he never had any control. He should of pull the bus over in a safe location and call the dispatcher and let them know what was going on, and if he wasnt that far from the school take them back to school if transporation department said ok. The very first day of school one should put down their rules and enforced them. One thing is assigned seat. What I do at the beginning of each school year I let the student pick their seat, this help because they can sit with their friend, I explain to them if they disobey the rules they can lose their seating privilege. You have one of two you have to prove that to, they have to move to the front and no longer sit with their friend. Students on the bus is just like your own children if you dont disciple them when they need it, it will get out of hand. The bus driver seen like a nice person from hearing his voice, some just take advantage of it. To the bus driver hang in there and GOd bless you. Also, for those that think they can take over the bus, I have a one on one talk with them along with one of staff at school for my witness, and explain to them what will happen if they don't make a change in their behavior and I allow them to talk, and most of the time it just misunderstand on one behalf, so we dicuss it briely and get a good understand of the problem and that seen to help alot, but I do a lot of praying also that really help. Thank

We want this to be an open forum for the hundreds of thousands of people that help get students to school safely every day. We want to hear what you think, what's going on at your facility and what solutions you've found. But, please, keep it civil. Just like on the bus, we'll have no tolerance for attacks or anything defamatory. We won't write you up, but we'll delete the comments right away. So don't bother. But if you have something to share, this is your place.

Thanks,
