War of the Rose Bowl?

By Ryan Gray

The Rose Bowl is known as the granddaddy of them all when it comes to college football games, but organizers are now also asserting their power in an attempt to change the current charter rule that usurps a previous agreement with local transit agencies to provide shuttle services to events.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) circulated a "Dear Colleague" letter late last month asking other members of Congress to support a legislative change to the current rule, which is included in the transportation bill reauthorization scheduled for later this summer. Accompanying the letter was a request to House Transportation Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar (D-MN) and Ranking Member John Mica (R-FL) suggesting language that according to the National School Transportation Association would significantly change and do much damage to the current charter rule.

While Schiff and Dreier made no mention of school bus charter service, NSTA responded last week by joining other members of the Coalition of Private Passenger Transportation Organizations (COPPTO) in a letter that called upon every member of Congress
"to recognize the unfair advantage federally subsidized public transportation would have if they were allowed to carry out charter service."

  1. The joint efforts from all agencies should be, and continue to be, safe ways for school children to go to school. Back when we all grew up we lived through the summer breaks running all over town or the country sides and did just fine. Maybe back then there wasn't as many vehicles and there wasn't any one driving those vehicles on drugs made out of battery acid and drain-o. Here in Bedford, IN., there have been attempts at building side walks along the roads where there were none before. That does help for those children who live close to schools yet have to walk out in the street if they walk to a certain school. There has been progress. Let us not forget the child molesters that the local police agencies have to monitor in areas of school walk zones where a school bus does not pick up the children. It would be nice if every penny allotted for these special projects actually made it to the intended programs they were developed for. There would be plenty more sidewalks being built if that were the case. You always hear about the small towns and cities who have written submissions for grant monies just to build ADA accessible sidewalks. There are more and more people walking due to the higher fuel prices. I look for more people to consider moving back in closer to the towns and cities if fuel prices keep going up in the future. So that would mean more school children going to the city schools and less to the county school buildings, unless they bus the kids all over the place.

The politicians want what money they can get. We understand that. Many of the projects began with really nice intentions. If any of you understand the large rock being thrown into the pond, then you can also see how the large stimulous packages will cause some large waves for ALL of us tax payers. It is real easy for Washington Politicians to run the money printing presses wide open. Spend, spend, and spend some more. It is like someone who just got their first credit card. It is really nice to have and works really nice when you want something and don't have the money in your pockets. Then when the first month's credit card bill invoice comes in the mail - it hits home that now you have to pay, and pay and pay.

School boards have budgets just like any other big business does in order to survive. You do not spend someone else's money unless your name is on the bill and you intended to pay the bill yourself. No one asked us tax payers on any of the voting ballots if we wanted to have bailout packages for all the people who spent money they did not have. What about small town school budgets? Teachers will be laid off because the tax base no longer is there. Factories have closed. Many left the country and took American built jobs with them. Where is all the needed money going to come from to pay all the bailout packages? From the failed businesses who paid their CEO's the money that should have been re-invested back into the company they worked for?

It is ALL our tax monies being spent. Our grand children's children will still be paying these off in the future.

I would like to see programs with real needs yet local agencies need to meet regular, network every month and make joint arrangements for their communities and not depend on someone from Washington D.C. that have no clue what a small community faces. It use to be illegal to print out paper money. I guess our government can do it if it is tax money bailouts.

I hope there will still be school buildings open at the end of all these government money built sidewalks!!! Does anyone have any of these sidewalks in your areas?

Have a nice summer. Dan, Bedford, IN.
